Anime Influence: Anime That Deserves a Reboot (2024)

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Anime Influence, which is similar to Gaming Influence. However, I am mainly giving my thoughts on certain anime and anime series with some fun mix of anime-related content here.

For this edition of Anime Influence, I'll list which anime deserves a reboot.

Before I start, my list will only be based on anime TV shows based on manga, light novels, novels, video games, and original animations. This list will not include OVAs, movies, or specials. In addition, this list won't include anime adaptations of manhwa and manhua so keep that in mind.

Anyway, let's get started!

Before I start the actual list, here are some honorable mentions that I believe should get a reboot, but they didn't make it on the list:

Honorable Mentions: Love Hina, Eyeshield 21, Violence Jack, Disgaea, The Flowers of Evil, Kinnikuman, The Vision of Escaflowne, Silent Mobius, Android Kikaider The Animation, Outlaw Star, The Big O, Akira, GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka, Fushigi Yuugi, Yu-Gi-Oh!, His & Her Circumstances, Record of Lodoss War, Battle Angel

WARNING

The following article/editorial will contain spoilers on the anime and the source material of where the anime is based on. If you don't want to get spoiled, read at your own risk and have been warned.

Anyway, let's start with the first anime that I believe deserves a reboot:

One of the first anime that I believe should get a reboot is Fate stay/night. Fate stay/night is a Japanese visual novel game developed by Type-Moon for Windows on January 30, 2004. It then later became a manga series written by Datto Nishiwaki as it was published by Kadokawa Shoten in the magazine, Shōnen Ace, as it ran from December 26, 2005, to October 26, 2012. The series then became an anime TV show series which was animated by Studio Deen and aired from January 7, 2006, to June 17, 2006.

The way they set up this anime TV show series was quite disappointing when it first aired as it didn't really do the game justice in my opinion. I felt like the animation wasn't as good as it should be in terms of the fights and the writing for this wasn't great either that didn't feel like Fate stay/night in my opinion. The prequels/sequels to this series with Fate/Zero were so much better compared to Fate stay/night as it was done by studio ufotable where they're well known for its beautiful animation. If Fate stay/night can be rebooted, but with ufotable being the studio to animate it, that would be great and amazing.

One of those underrated series out there, Claymore, deserves a reboot. Claymore is a Japanese dark fantasy game series written and illustrated by Norihiro Yagi. It was serialized in Shueisha's Monthly Shōnen Jump from June 6, 2001, to June 6, 2007, before transferring to Jump Square from November 2, 2007, to October 4, 2014. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Madhouse which aired from April 4, 2007, to September 6, 2007. The series then had a video game which was developed by Digital Works Entertainment as it was released on the Nintendo DS on May 28, 2009.

Even though I think the anime was really well done, it didn't end properly as the manga was still ongoing when the anime ended. Getting a reboot of this series would mean that we get a proper ending to the series in anime form. Granted, if we don't get it, I'll be fine with it, but would love to see it happen if possible.

One of the more popular sports anime series out there, Slam Dunk, deserves a reboot I feel. Slam Dunk is a Japanese sports manga written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from October 1990 to June 1996. The series then became an anime TV show series which was animated by Toei Animation and aired from October 16, 1993, to March 23, 1996.

Even though Slam Dunk is one of the more popular sports anime series out there, the animation for the series at the time wasn't the best. Luckily, the story, the characters, and the games really carried through the anime as a whole just like the manga, but better animation would be great. Plus, they can also use this opportunity to adapt the Inter-High Tournament Arc from the manga which they never did in the anime. If Toei Animation or any other animation studio can give this series a reboot, it would be great, but if not, I'm satisfied with what we have.

One of the more popular romance comedy series, Rosario + Vampire, deserves a reboot. Rosario + Vampire is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akihisa Ikeda. It was serialized in Shueisha's Monthly Shōnen Jump from April 6, 2004, to June 6, 2007. The sequel, Rosario + Vampire: Season II, came five months later and it was serialized in Shueisha's Jump Square from November 4, 2007, to April 19, 2014. The series then became an anime TV show series, which was animated by Gonzo and aired from January 3, 2008, to March 27, 2008. The series also became a novel as it was serialized by Shueisha's Jump J-Books on April 4, 2008. The sequel, Rosario + Vampire Capu2, came seven months later where it was animated by Gonzo and aired from October 2, 2008, to December 24, 2008. The series then became a video game developed by Capcom and was released on the Nintendo DS on March 30, 2008, with the title, Rosario + Vampire: Tanbata's Miss Yokai Academy. The game's sequel, Rosario + Vampire Capu2: The Rhapsody of Love and Dreams, was released on PS2 and developed by Compile Heart on July 23, 2009.

Even though the first season of Rosario + Vampire was done well, the second season of it was definitely rushed as the second season of the manga just started during that time so they didn't have much source material to cover and ended the anime very quickly with the manga was still ongoing. I would definitely want to see this series get a reboot just so the other arcs can be animated as the later arcs in Rosario + Vampire can be quite fun and would be cool to see them get animated. We'll see if this will happen down the line or not.

One of the more popular shōnen series in the 90s deserves a reboot: YuYu Hakusho. YuYu Hakusho is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 3, 1990, to July 25, 1994. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Pierrot and aired from October 10, 1992, to December 17, 1994.

The anime of the series was great for the most part until the end where they pretty much rushed the Demon World Tournament Arc which was definitely quite disappointing. Granted, it wasn't bad, but definitely deserved a lot better and a reboot would be great to give the Demon World Tournament Arc a better adaptation so it can be closer to what the manga was. Granted, if we don't get a reboot of this series, I'm totally fine with it since it's great up until the final arc, but I won't complain if we do get a reboot in the future.

One of the well-known romantic comedy series of the 2000s, Ouran High School Host Club, deserves a reboot. It is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Bisco Hatori. It was serialized in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine from September 2002 to November 2010. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Bones and aired from April 5, 2006, to September 26, 2006. The series then became a TV drama that aired on TBS from July 22, 2011, to September 30, 2011. Finally, the series also had a live-action film which aired in 2012.

Even though the anime series was good for the most part, it could definitely be improved upon as a reboot could definitely help the series as a whole. The series only had one season which only covered up to the first half of the manga so viewers only got to witness the first half of the series whereas we never got the second half as I feel like the series picks up in the second half and a shame that we never get to see it in anime form. If we don't get a reboot of this series, I'll be fine with it, but really hope we do get it in the future.

This is probably one of the more obscure/niche series out there, but Umineko When They Cry deserves a reboot. Umineko When They Cry is a Japanese dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion which was released on PC in 2007. The series then became a manga written by Ryukishi07 as it was published by Square Enix in the magazine, Monthly Shōnen Ganga, as it ran from December 22, 2007, to June 22, 2015. The series then became a novel series written by Ryukishi07 as it was published by Kodansha with its imprint of Kodansha Box from July 1, 2009, to September 30, 2018. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Studio Deen and aired from July 2, 2009, to December 24, 2009.

The anime itself has a lot to be desired as they didn't really adapt the series well from the original source material. In the game, the series has a lot of gore and very horrifying moments while in the anime, they didn't showcase any of that which left a lot to be desired. I feel like a reboot of this series will be great as they can incorporate the main elements of what makes this series special in the first place. Whether we get it or not is uncertain, but would love to see it happen.

This is another niche/obscure series that I don't think many people know of personally, Gantz, deserves a reboot. Gantz is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. It was serialized in Shuiesha's Weekly Young Jump from June 29, 2000, to June 20, 2013. The series then became an anime TV show which aired from April 13, 2004, to November 18, 2004.

Even though the anime wasn't bad entirely, it didn't really go all the way to what the original source material is all about. There was censorship in the anime where the manga didn't. Plus, the anime also ended when the manga was still ongoing so the series never had a proper conclusion. A reboot of this series would be great to show the true potential of what this series is all about, but we'll see if it happens down the line or not.

This is another niche/obscure series that I don't think many people know about, s-CRY-ed, and it deserves a reboot. s-CRY-ed is an anime television series animated by Sunrise that aired on TV Tokyo from July 4, 2001, to December 26, 2001. The series then became a manga serialized in Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion from October 4, 2001, to June 20, 2002. The series also became a light novel written by Kazuho Hyodo and illustrated by Hisashi Hirai which was imprinted in Dengeki Bunko from May 10, 2002, to May 10, 2003.

Despite the anime not being bad at all as it's well done in its own right, having a reboot of this anime will do wonders since animation has evolved a ton in the past two decades. With updated visuals, I feel like this anime could get a whole new audience on what this series is all about as it's a pretty good series for what it is. Whether this anime will get a reboot remains to be seen, but would love to see it happen if possible.

This is somewhat of a well-known series in the 2000s that deserves a reboot, Katekyō Hitman Reborn. Katekyō Hitman Reborn is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akira Amano. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from May 24, 2004, to November 12, 2012. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Artland which aired from October 7, 2006, to September 25, 2010. The series then became a light novel written by Hideaki Koyasu and illustrated by Akira Amano which was imprinted from Shueisha's Jump J-Books from March 12, 2007, to May 2, 2011.

The series was pretty good for the most part I feel like, but some parts could be improved upon like the pacing and adding the blood that was shown in the manga that didn't show in the odd anime. Plus, I would like to see the final arcs to be animated which I never got a chance to do since the anime ended when the manga was still ongoing. If it doesn't happen, I won't be sad about it, but I would love to see it happen regardless.

This is one of the more well-known romance-comedy series in the 2000s, Skip Beat!, as I believe the series deserves a reboot. Skip Beat! is a Japanese shōjo manga by Yoshiki Nakamura. It was serialized by Hakusensha's Hana to Yume on February 7, 2002, and it's still ongoing. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Hal Film Maker which aired from October 5, 2008, to March 29, 2009.

Even though the anime was pretty good for what it did, it only had one season and stopped there while the manga is still ongoing to this day. Having a reboot of the series would bring life to the series again while also adapting new content from the manga itself which would be marvelous. Even if we don't get it, I wouldn't be upset, but would love to see a reboot of this series down the line.

One of the darkest series out there, Elfen Lied, deserves a reboot. Elfen Lied is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Lynn Okamoto. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump from June 6, 2002, to August 25, 2005. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Arms and Studio Guts which aired from July 25, 2004, to October 17, 2004.

When this series came out back then, it was very controversial in terms of how it was done and so forth as it was definitely a series that took a lot of people off guard. Watching the series nowadays will hit differently and make you reflect that this series could've been done better especially when the anime ended when the manga was still ongoing. Having a reboot of this series will give it another chance and hopefully if it does happen, it'll be done a lot better, but only time will tell if it'll happen or not.

One of those underrated series that I don't think a lot of people talked about, Tsukihime, deserves a reboot. Tsukihime is a Japanese adult visual novel game created by Type-Moon which was released on PC on December 29, 2000, in Japan. The game then became a manga written by Sasaki Shōnen as it was serialized in ASCII Media Works' magazine, Dengeki Daioh, from August 21, 2003, to July 27, 2010. The series then became an anime TV show animated by J.C. Staff which aired from October 10, 2003, to December 26, 2003.

Even though the actual game itself is pretty good, the anime itself was not. It was rushed which made the story very confusing as the anime as a whole was just questionable on how it was done and so forth. I would love to see this series get a proper reboot so people can appreciate how good Tsukihime truly is. However, only time will tell if we ever get that reboot of it.

Another underrated series that doesn't get talked about as much, Deadman Wonderland, deserves a reboot. Deadman Wonderland is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou. It was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shōnen Ace from April 26, 2007, to July 26, 2013. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Manglobe, which aired from April 17, 2011, to July 3, 2011.

This anime had the potential to be great and it had a great start, but as the episodes went on, it started to be more disappointing as the story was rushed and everything was crammed in together towards the end which I wasn't a fan of as they didn't adapt the manga pretty well. Having a reboot of this series would be great as they would fully adapt to the manga which wasn't finished when the anime ended. Will it happen? That remains to be seen, but hope it happens as it deserves it.

This is one of the series that was talked about a lot when it first aired, Akame ga Kill!, deserves a reboot. Akame ga Kill! is a Japanese manga series written by Takahiro and illustrated by Tetsuya Tashiro. It was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Gangan Joker from March 20, 2010, to December 22, 2016. The series then had a prequel titled Akame ga Kill! Zero which was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Gangan Joker from October 25, 2013, to January 25, 2019. The series then became an anime TV show animated by White Fox and it aired from July 7, 2014, to December 15, 2014. The series then had a spin-off titled Hinowa ga Crush! which was also serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan from June 24, 2017, to June 24, 2022.

The show was very promising at the start, but as time goes, it started to get repetitive and predictable which lost a lot of people including myself as they definitely rushed the ending as the manga was still going at the time so they couldn't fully adapt the whole story. Doing a reboot of this series will do this series justice as it's pretty good. Only time will tell if we get it, but we'll have to wait and see.

This is one of those series that I feel like wasn't talked about as much during its time, Promised Neverland, deserves a reboot. The Promised Neverland is a Japanese manga series written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posaku Demizu. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from August 1, 2016, to June 15, 2020. The series then became a light novel series written by Nakao and illustrated by Posaku Demizu. It was published by Jump J-Books from June 4, 2018, to December 4, 2020. The series then became an anime TV show animated by CloverWorks where the two seasons ran from January 11, 2019, to March 26, 2021. The series also had a video game titled, The Promised Neverland: Escape The Hunting Grounds, which was developed by GOODROID and was released on mobile devices on April 22, 2021.

Granted, the first season of the anime for the series was incredible and it set up a very high bar on what the next seasons for this series would be. However, the second season came in and it completely destroyed the anime series as a whole. The fact that they rushed the story and skipped a lot of arcs to just show the ending for the second season was abyssmal. I was very disappointed because this series is pretty good, but the second season of the anime was just terrible and left a sour taste on many people including myself. This series deserves a reboot badly just to make up that second season and hope it happens in the future.

This is one of those series that was talked about a lot during its time, Soul Eater, deserves a reboot. Sooul Eater is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Atsushi Ohkubo. It was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan, from May 12, 2004, to August 12, 2013. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Bones and aired from April 7, 2008, to March 30, 2009.

The anime was pretty great for the most part, but the ending was a lot to be desired. Granted, it was understandable at the time as the manga was still ongoing when the anime ended, but having a reboot with this series with a proper ending with the manga finally ending and seeing it being animated would be awesome. Don't know if it'll happen, but hope to see it happen down the line.

Another series that was talked about a lot during its time, Pandora Hearts, deserves a reboot. Pandora Hearts is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. It was serialized in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy, from May 18, 2006, to March 18, 2015. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Xebec and aired from April 2, 2009, to September 24, 2009.

This is quite similar to Soul Eater in my opinion where I believe the anime was great, but again, the ending, left a lot to be desired due to the manga was still ongoing at the time. Would love to see the series get a reboot to just see the proper ending from the manga in anime form which would be great. However, will it happen? That remains to be seen, but hope it does.

One of the more well known seinen series back in the 2010s, Tokyo Ghoul, deserves a reboot. Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. It was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump, from September 8, 2011, to September 18, 2014. The series then became an anime TV show animated by Pierrot which aired from July 4, 2014, to September 19, 2014.

Oh man, where do I start with the anime series for this. Granted, Tokyo Ghoul, the anime, or the first season, was decent. It could be a lot better than what it was, but it wasn't terrible. However, then Tokyo Ghoul √A came in and the seasons after that, is when everything started to fall downhill which ruined what the original series is all about from the manga. Would love to see this series as a whole get rebooted because Tokyo Ghoul, the manga, is pretty good, and the anime deserves a lot better so hope that it would happen down the line.

One of those classic cult series that I feel like deserves more attention, Berserk, deserves a reboot. Berserk is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. It was serialized in Hakusensha's Monthly Animal House from 1989 to 1992 before switching to Hakusensha's Young Animal from 1992 to present. The series then became an anime TV show animated by OLM from 1997 to 1998 where another reboot of the show was done in 2016 to 2017.

Berserk is one of those classic manga that stood within the test of time and is still ongoing to this day despite the passing of the author of the series, Kentaro Miura. Despite the manga being amazing as it is, the anime for it is a whole different story. They tried to animate Berserk twice, one in late 90s, and one in late 2010s. For both of them, they weren't great at all as they didn't feel or sell what the series is as a whole which is very disappointing and left a lot of people with sour tastes in their mouths. Obviously, the series deserves another anime reboot, but the question is, which studio should animate it and which studio can actually do this series justice? I don't know the answer, but maybe any of you reading this can tell me who so let me know in the comments.

I think those are the anime that deserve a reboot as of 2024.

What anime do you think deserves a reboot and why?

Let me know in the comments below.

Thank you for reading.
