Vaude For Thought: What Makes Manga/Anime Great

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the fourth edition of Vaude For Thought where I will give my thoughts on certain topics and for this edition of Vaude For Thought, it's about what makes manga/anime great.

Let's get started.

Vaude For Thought: What Makes Manga/Anime Great

Now, before I get to the topic in hand, for those who are not aware, what is manga/anime? Manga is a comic or graphic novel originated from Japan while anime is hand-drawn and computer animation originated from Japan. In other words, manga is a Japanese comic/graphic novel while anime is a Japanese animation which can also be seen as Japanese cartoons.

With that out of the way, let's talk about what makes manga/anime great.

There are multiple reasons that make manga/anime great. Granted, manga/anime are not for everyone and I understand. However, for those who bash on it for not even reading/watching them, or for people that have an interest on them, these are the reasons what make manga/anime great: story, art, and characters.

Let's start with the story first.

Every book/TV show need a compelling story to engage readers/viewers to see what happens next. Manga/anime is no different when it comes to bringing unique and compelling stories in their content. Sure, there are a few manga/anime out there that do not have an interesting plot or even a plot at all, but it all depends on the actual manga/anime as well as a person's taste and genre you are looking for.

For example, if you're into action and shounen manga/anime like Naruto, One Piece, and Dragon Ball, you might find the story quite compelling and fun. However, if you aren't into action and shounen manga/anime, you might find uncompelling and orbing. Again, it all comes to preferences and tastes on different genres and stories when it comes to manga/anime. At the same time, that's what makes manga/anime great. There are a lot of different genres within the manga/anime world so if one genre doesn't suit you, you can check out others and they might appeal to you like action, shounen, shojo, seinen, josei, slice of life, romance, comedy, drama, mysteries, thrillers, etc.

So if you're looking for a new adventure in terms of storytelling, manga/anime would be the place to look into as I mentioned, the variety of different stories that the authors write are very diverse in terms of genre, tone, and atmosphere so whichever one that you find interest in, I say go for it and check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Now, let's go on with art.

Art is something that attracts people for its appearances. When it comes to manga/anime, art is a part of it as readers/viewers will see the art of the manga/anime and that will determine whether the reader/viewer will watch the manga/anime or not. Just like with story, art can be decisive depending on people's tastes and preferences.

For example, generally for people that like action, they will tend to look at art that looks cool, has a certain style to it, or attention grabbing instead of like a cute and charming type of art style.

Likewise, for people that wants something adorable and bring good vibes, they will tend to look at art that looks cute, charming, and something that you will bring them joy instead of something cool or gory type of art style.

Granted, just like with books/TV shows, people tend to judge them by their covers and manga/anime is no different especially when it comes to art. However, just like with the phrase you normally heard with books/movies, "Don't judge them by their cover", the same applies to manga/anime because sometimes the art can be deceiving to people.

There are cases where manga/anime that have tremendous art, but everything else about the manga/anime in terms of story, characters, etc. are terrible. Likewise, there are manga/anime that have art that is not as striking or compelling compared to other manga/anime, but the story, characters, etc. are amazing.

Like I said, art is subjective, but don't let it be the main factor on deciding on whether or not a manga/anime is great or not as it could surprise you.

Finally, let's talk about characters.

With books/TV shows, you need enjoyable and compelling characters within the story that readers/viewers can either relate, support, or get into. Otherwise, they won't be interested and will drop the book/TV show entirely. The same applies to manga/anime where characters are essential and it will also determine whether or not, it's for them depending on the characters' personalities and actions.

Just like with books/TV shows, there are characters within manga/anime that you will love and hate depending on your preferences and tastes. Whether it's your typical superhero character that tries to protect everyone, the jerk character that rubs people the wrong way, the know-it-all genius character, the very shy and quiet character, etc., there are characters for everyone to enjoy and despise which does impact on how you feel about the manga/anime as a whole.

In addition, just like with characters in books/TV shows, they tend to evolve and develop after learning about their backstory or seeing the adventure that they go through. The same applies to manga/anime as you can get deeply invested into a character or completely despised a character depending on their personality, their actions, their backstory, or the journey that they've been through.

For example, let's say you hated the protagonist in the beginning of a certain manga/anime due to them being a jerk to everyone around them. However, as time went on by going through their journey and learning about their backstory on why they are a jerk in the first place, you understand what the protagonist has been through and once they started to change for the better, you support the character and even like the character now because of the experiences they have went through as you understand the character a lot more. The same can happen vice versa where you like a character at first, but as they go through their adventure and learn more about them, you can despise them so it all depends on people's tastes and preferences on what type of characters they like and dislike.

Either way, characters within manga/anime can make readers/viewers love or hate them depending on how they act throughout the entire series. Whether you're into them or not is surely dependent on what readers/viewers tend to like or dislike about a character. Regardless, without any characters that are likable or compelling, it's usually hard to get into a manga/anime without them as you have no one to support or get behind when reading/watching.

Overall, manga/anime is great due to their compelling stories, beautiful art, and enjoyable characters depending on the series as well as your preferences and tastes. Granted, manga/anime is not everyone. However, for those who hate it despite not reading/watching them before, maybe actually give them a chance and see if you enjoy them or not before trashing on it? Just a thought.

Plus, as I mentioned before, if there's one manga/anime you don't enjoy, there are others out there so pick something that interest you and if you enjoy them, go from there. If you are interested in manga/anime, give them a chance and find what you like as there's something for everyone when it comes to manga/anime.
