Gaming Influence: Thoughts - Final Fantasy VII Rebirth State of Play

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Gaming Influence, a reboot of the same name I created in WrestleCorp. However, not only will I be giving my thoughts on certain video games and video game series, but also video game movies, video game anime, video game digital presentations, etc.

For this edition of Gaming Influence, I'll be giving my thoughts on the State of Play of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth that happened on February 6, 2024.

Anyway, let's get started!

Now, for those who are unfamiliar with the Final Fantasy series, it's a Japanese role-playing game series developed by Square Enix. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series is a reimagining of the original Final Fantasy VII that was released on the PSX in 1997.

With this game coming out this month, did PlayStation do enough to satisfy the Final Fantasy VII fans as well as players who never played the series before to pick up the series? Well, let's find out and talk about what they've shown.

They first show a brand new trailer for the game and it was excellent. Yoshinori Kitase, a producer of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, mentioned that the game will start right after Cloud and his friends leave Midgar and judging by everything we see in the trailer as well as the director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Naoki Hamaguchi, the game will end at the Forgotten Capital which is going to be very interesting. Without saying much as that'll get into spoiler territory, it looks like there'll be story elements from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion that will play out here in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which I'm super excited about. Finally, the story continues to be interesting as it's still telling the main story points from the original, but also adding something new and different which is awesome as well as giving certain locations in the game more depth and attention compared to the original as I also appreciate that too. What a trailer to start off the presentation which made me super hyped about this game even more than before.

A Vast World

There will be multiple regions that players can explore in the world in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth including The Grasslands, Junon Region, Corel Region, Gongaga Region, Cosmo Canyon Region, Nibel Region. and Meridian Ocean. There is also World Intel where Chadley will return as you'll assist him with his research as you tried to gather protorelics for him. By collecting protorelics, it could lead to interesting challenges. There are also odd jobs or quests in this game where there are some odd jobs that are from the original Final Fantasy VII, but also original ones that are made within this game. In addition, you can always go back to the sidequests whenever you're available as they're optional. There are also minigames in this game as a lot of them are returning from the original Final Fantasy that you can play in the Gold Saucer as 3D Brawler, GP Ride, and Chocobo Racing. In addition, minigames from Final Fantasy VII Remake will also make a return, but improved and enhanced as well as new original minigames that are made within this game. Plus, minigames from the original Final Fantasy VII from the main story have been improved for a better experience as well as there being a brand new original minigame called Queen's Blood as it's deck building card game.

Man, I didn't expect this world to be as massive as it is. I knew it was going to be massive, but not this massive and it's incredible to see. It's just like how you explore the world map back in the original Final Fantasy VII, but in a whole new perspective. Glad to see that there will be new sidequests in this game that are original as well as some new minigames too which I think should be a lot of fun if I need a break from the main story. I'm looking forward to seeing how the world of Final Fantasy VII Remake series will turn out in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Cinematic Storytelling

The cinematic storytelling of this game will be a lot more compared to Final Fantasy VII Remake as it will determine the fate on what happens to Aerith. The graphics in the game have been enhanced due to the hardware of PS5 and the SSD where it takes full advantage of the resolution as well as the loading speeds being instant. There's also a performance and graphics mode where performance mode will let the game run in 60 fps with HD resolution while the graphics mode will let the game run in 30 fps with 4K resolution. You can also control as different characters throughout the game such as Barret shooting objects, Yuffie swinging across gaps, Tifa having a grappling gun, Red XIII can climb long walls, Cait Sith grabbing and throwing items, and Aerith being able to manipulate the Lifestream. The music in this game will contain more than 400 tracks that are remixes from the original Final Fantasy VII as well as new original songs for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

I have a feeling that the story of Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to kill me emotionally and I don't know if I'm ready for it, but it's going to be a journey, that's for sure. They're definitely doing a lot of improvements from Final Fantasy VII Remake to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in terms of graphics and performance which I appreciate. I also like the fact that they're expanding upon using different characters for exploration and that's a neat touch. Finally, the music is going to be incredible as we're going to get more than 400 tracks total is absolute insanity. I can't wait to experience this soundtrack once I play the game, it's going to be a blast.

Bonds of Friendship

The characters will not only grow within the story, but also gameplay too as the choices you make within the game can enhance the relationships between the characters. Depending on the relationships Cloud has with his party members, he can invite one of them to a date on the Gold Saucer. The characters will not only bond with Cloud, but with each other as well as they can increase the party level where the party can increase their skills set within combat by the folios which are similar to skill trees. Synergy commands are the new gameplay mechanics in this game where it's a double team special move that can deal a lot of damage and have special status effects among enemies, but can also buff or heal party members as well depending on the synergy commands.

I really like the fact that they put more emphasis on the characters in this game especially with the interactions as it could help increase skills for the party. Love that they're expanding on the dates for the Gold Saucer portion so curious to see how that will turn out. Finally, the synergy commands are sick and there are so many combinations to do too which will definitely enhance the gameplay experience a ton. Looking forward to seeing how the characters will do here as well as experience the synergy commands for myself in this game.

Finally, we got a message from the creative director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Tetsuya Nomura, that they'll be a demo for the game available now. This demo will feature the beginning of the game where you are in Nibelheim playing as Cloud and Sephiroth. In addition, the demo will add more content up to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth where players can play a portion of the Junon region. Holy crap! The legend himself has graced us with a demo for the game and it looks to be meaty too as we wait for the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. It's only a few weeks away and I can't wait!

Overall, this was an excellent presentation from PlayStation. This is one of the most hyped PS5-exclusive games that I'm excited for and it continues to look incredible in terms of graphics, gameplay, story, characters, and music. The fact that this game has a demo available now for players to try is incredible and if it's anything like Final Fantasy VII Remake, but with the open-world to explore, we're in for a big treat as this game has the potential to be Game of the Year, or at least one of many people's favorite Game of 2024. I can't wait to play this game as it's going to be incredible as we don't have to wait long as it'll be released on February 29, 2024, on PS5.
